The Mekong Initiative
The Mekong Region Development Research Group (MRDRG), generously supported by the Henry Luce Foundation, is a consortium of social scientists and other researchers working at universities, NGOs and governmental research institutions across the Mekong region, the United States and Singapore.
The MRDRG promotes the development of regional and international research teams that address emerging trans-border development issues, such as the human development consequences of ethnic and political conflict, interactions between population and environment, the impact of road networks and infrastructure, accelerating migration and population aging.
It advances research capacity through short-course trainings in advanced research methods and scholarly communication, mentored study and scholarly exchanges and the building a Mekong Region language and area studies curriculum at the University of Utah. Jointly, these efforts feed into supportive, sustained partnerships in which Mekong region scholars and researchers take leading roles in cross-national and comparative research. The MRDRG is funded by a Grant from the Henry Luce Foundation’s Asia Responsive Grant Program and is centered at and administered by the Asia Center at the University of Utah.
The goals of the MRDRG include:
- Fostering and solidifying long-term associations among MRDRG researchers
- Facilitating collaborative research efforts in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)
- Building research capacity in the GMS
