In order to declare a major or minor in Asian Studies, students are required to meet with an advisor. Asian Studies is an open major, 
meaning that you don't have to apply or take any prerequisites to declare.

Major Overview

A minimum of 13 Asian Studies courses totaling 39 credit hours must be completed successfully. Students must pass each Asian Studies course with a C or better. The credit/no credit grading option is NOT available to Asian Studies majors when enrolled in AS courses. No more than four courses taken from any one department can be counted for the major.

  • Core Courses ( 9 credit hours)
    • HIST 1210: Traditions
    • HIST 1220: Modern History/Societies
    • ASTP 3001: Exploring Asia 
  • Language or Methods Requirement (6 credit hours)
    • 6 credits of 3000+ Asian language courses
    • 6 credits of approved methods courses
  • Seven Asian Studies classes, five of which must be in a core geographic area or have a thematic element, the other two must be outside the core area. Electives and themes must be pre-approved with the advisor.
  • Signature Experience (3 credit hours) 
    • Complete 3 credits by participating in a study abroad, internship, independent study/research course, or community-engaged-learning course. 

Notes: No more than 3 credits from a Hinckley internship may count toward your major and no more than 4 courses from the same department may count toward your major.

Grade Requirements: All major courses must be taken for a minimum letter grade of C or better.
